The former first lady made her Bobby Kennedy comments during an interview with the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board, and she made them in an attempt to negate recent calls for her to bow out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president.
“My husband didn’t wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June,” Clinton said. “We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it,” which referred to the thinking of those who would have her bow out now--at a junction that Hillary considers to be too soon.
After Senator Bobby Kennedy was fatally shot in June of 1968 in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan Sirhan, a Jordanian immigrant, Hubert Humphrey became the eventual Democratic nominee. Until his assassination, Kennedy had been the front runner in the race and was assumed by most to have the nomination virtually sewn up, much like Barack Obama's situation today. The question is, does Hillary expect something similar to happen 40 years after the Bobby Kennedy Assassination in June of 2008? Is Hillary remaining in the race because she believes some type of violence will befall Senator Obama, and she wants to be there waiting in the wings so the Democrats will have her to fall back on should Obama not be physically able to continue his presidential campaign?
Senator Obama accepted Secret Service protection much earlier than the other candidates. It is said that he has had several death threats already.
Anyone tuned into the pulse of Americans' thinking knows that there are many folks in the nation that absolutely hate the idea of an African American as President of the the United States. Just because the Ku Klux Klan is no longer lynching black Americans does not mean that the folks who wore those Klan hoods over their heads have changed their thinking.Does Hillary Clinton expect one of those racists to pave the way for her to obtain the nomination through violence? If she does, she may have blown her opportunity because she is receiving heat about her remarks from all corners of the political spectrum. She has already apologized for her remarks, but that may not be enough. She may have destroyed any remaining chance she has for the nomination by speaking out of turn.
